Cylburn Barrens
Description
Described by Clyde Reed as extending from Sinai Hospital downstream to the Jones Falls Expressway, along the northern edge of Cylburn (home of Jesse Tyson). Essentially obliterated from a floristic perspective by the twentieth century, although Reed found an unusual moss here.
Ferncliff Barrens
Description
Clyde Reed reported a barrens in the vicinity of Ferncliff but only collected a few indeterminate panic grasses from the area. Location uncertain.
Henryton Barrens
Description
Clyde Reed describes an "elongated serpentine" area stretching from West Friendship to Henryton, and locates a specimen there, rather imprecisely. Location quite uncertain.
Marriottsville Barrens
Description
Clyde Reed mentions a small barrens here on steatite and talc. It may never have supported open grassland.
Eldersburg Barrens
Description
Clyde Reed notes the presence of a small serpentine barrens south of Eldersburg along Route 32. It appears that a few serpentine-grown oaks may survive behind the park-and-ride lot.
Washington Grove Barrens
Description
Clyde Reed notes the presence of a small serpentine barrens at Washington Grove. The area is now developed and the location approximate.
Darnestown Barrens
Description
A narrow belt of serpentine extends inland from the Potomac between Darnestown and Travilah and crosses Maryland Route 28 before pinching out. Clyde Reed notes a small barrens here, possibly near Quince Orchard at the north end of the serpentine, an area now completely developed.
